Poop’ May Prevent Weight Gain

Ever thought that eating your own poop may affect your weight gain pattern especially after losing a drastic amount of weight? How does this idea of eating your own poop to prevent weight gain sound? In a new bizarre trial in Israel, some abdominally obese patients and dyslipidemic patients were studied to evaluate the weight gain pattern after losing it once. They were grouped into a healthy diet, Mediterranean diet, and green-Mediterranean diet group.

These participants were given capsules containing a fecal microbiome that was obtained from their own poop in order to evaluate their weight gain pattern. The complete details of this study are now published in the journal Gastroenterology.

This unique study was conducted by the research team from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU). This trial lasted for 14 months under Prof. Dr. Shai and his doctoral students’ student namely Dr. Ehud Rinott and Dr. Ilan Youngster, both from Tel-Aviv University. This team collaborated with a number of international researchers from top research institutes in Europe and the US.

This is a well-known fact that people who are trying to lose their weight achieve their lowest weight within four to six months of dieting and exercising. After that, they often experience a weight plateau and are no more able to lose weight, despite all efforts.

Dr. Shai, from the School of Public Health, had led a study that examined the effect of the faecal microbiome on a person’s weight loss. This fecal microbiome was obtained from the study participant’s poop samples and was formulated in capsule form.  Reportedly, these poop capsules helped participants in weight loss.

This trial studied people who are obese especially around the abdomen or have a high cholesterol level for six months, on different diets. After than 90 of them were given a poop capsule made from their fecal sample. It was a processed product and was free from any odor or taste. Regrouping of these participants was completed and each one of them was given 100 capsules or placebo for the next few months. After completion of 14 months of this study, the results were noted.

This is the first of its kind study which explored the potential of personal fecal microbiota obtained from fecal transplant and used after six months of a successful weight loss, after a re-transplant of the optimized fecal microbiome.

Those who were on green-Mediterranean diet showed a drastic change in their microbiome during this entire weight loss phase. Nearly 90 people were able to lose more than 8kgs weight within six months. But those in green-Mediterranean diet were also subjected to a regain of weight.

People in this green-Mediterranean diet also reported having bacteria that can make weight loss easy.

This is a novel study that shows that humans can create a microbiome that may be helpful in later months to achieve desired weight-related goals. As it changes the metabolism and responses of the body, these poop capsules may be an effective tool in all future weight loss programs.

Using a person’s own poop sample is a new concept to obtain fecal microbiota and introducing it back after some time something that has never studied before. These studies findings suggest that poop capsules may prevent weight gain especially after losing a huge amount of weight.
