Eating Meat may Cause Chronic Diseases in Humans

Plant-based diets are very popular and beneficial for health and they are also thought to be environment-friendly. Meat contains a low amount of plant protein while a higher amount of sulfur. These meat-based diets cause a number of health problems including strokes, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Also, the people who eat more meat-based diets often exhibit a shorter life expectancy.

A recent study conducted in the US finds that animal protein-rich diets increase the risk of chronic diseases while a plant-based diet reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Also, the effects of sulfur amino acids on health are investigated. Sulfur amino acids are found in many different foods but high in red meat, fish, eggs, and chicken.

Sulfur-containing amino acids play a crucial role in the human body when consumed at recommended levels and perform some important functions. Protect cells from damage, regulate neurotransmitters and hormones, build proteins, and keeps human lives healthy and strong.

But too much eating of sulfur amino acids rich foods causes negative effects on health. This overconsumption of sulfur amino acid-rich diets increases the risks of non-alcohol fatty liver diseases, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. And the risk of these health problems becomes greater when high levels of two sulfur amino acids, methionine and cysteine are included in the diet. Both of these sulfur amino acids are found in the high-protein foods and are considered as highly toxic amino acids for human health.

Researchers recommend that adults can consume 15mg of sulfur amino acids per kg of body weight a day. To get the best picture of the effects of sulfur amino acids, more than eleven thousand adults are included in the study. And not only the adult’s diet but also their cholesterol, blood glucose, and insulin levels are measured in this study.

These sulfur amino acid-rich diets, especially with methionine and cysteine, are associated with high cholesterol, high blood glucose, and insulin resistance. And all of these cause cardiometabolic diseases like strokes, heart attacks, non-alcohol fatty liver diseases, and diabetes.

Animal products contain high levels of sulfur amino acids. That’s why researchers suggest a diet of plant-based proteins that can keep the sulfur amino acid consumption closer to recommended levels.

This study explains that there are lower levels of cholesterol, insulin, and glucose in those who consumed lower levels of sulfur amino acids. Similarly, the lower consumption of sulfur amino acids decreases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Means plant-based proteins are more beneficial for health. And the exchange of animal-based protein sources for plant-based protein sources could be a good health move.

So the recent study considers nutrition, the major component in reducing the risks of premature death and chronic diseases. And the intake of sulfur amino acids from plant sources like beans, nuts, seeds, lentils, and whole grains can prevent to develop heart disease or diabetes in the future.
