Indian Actress Dies after Following Keto Diet- Is Keto Diet Really Safe?

The Indian film actress Mishti Mukherjee has taken her last breaths on Friday night in a local hospital in Bengaluru. The actresses had an underlying kidney disease which is considered as the ultimate cause of her kidney failure. Reportedly, she was following a keto diet which made her condition worsened and eventually death.

The 27- years old actresses started her Bollywood career with a movie in 2012, namely  Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi’. She appeared in many regional movies and music videos.

Although her family has shared kidney failure as the cause of her death, the press is talking about her keto weight-loss diet which initiated her liver failure. Reportedly, she was in extreme pain and her death has raised questions on the safety levels of these popular fad diets.

The ketogenic diet, commonly known as the keto diet is a specialized diet that contains a high amount of fats, an adequate amount of protein, and an extremely low amount of carbs. It triggers weight loss by pushing the body into ketosis which starts to use the body’s fat to produce energy. Once this process is initiated, the fat layers around the body are melted and the person following the diet experiences faster weight loss.

Following the standard, the fat content should make up to 75% part of the daily diet, 20% should be protein and only 5% is left for carbohydrates. The idea behind this diet is to change the body’s energy source from carbohydrates to fat. This way the body starts to use the accumulated fat layers, resulting in weight loss. The ketosis can take up to one week to start.

While weight loss is associated with numerous benefits, the keto diet, despite being popular has its own risks and threats. There are many studies that explain taking a high-fat diet like keto diet can damage the body and even cause death.

The problem with the keto diet is that it adds pressure to the kidneys function and many times keto followers experience kidney problems especially stones. The risk is highest for people who are following it for long term or have underlying kidney problems.

Health experts have shared their concerns over the popularity of the keto diet where most people start following this diet without consulting a nutritionist. Although there is no standard format of this diet but based on individual factors, this diet needs changes for every follower.

Eating a high amount of fat and meat increases the risk of kidney stones and those who already have kidney disease are at the highest risk of kidney failure, cardiac arrest, and death.

The safety concerns raised on death by keto diet requires every person who is considering this diet to get professional help. Only a certified nutritionist or dietician can create a customized plan and following any generalized ‘internet’ based keto diet plan is highly unsafe.

In addition to this, they warn people not to continue the keto diet for a longer period. In general, 30 to 45 days on a keto diet are enough to get the desired results in one go. If a person wants to shed more weight, he can re-start it after a few days gap.
