New coronavirus cases continue to hit official records from almost all parts of the US, making it the most severely hit country by the virus. The state and official healthcare authorities are encouraging people to follow preventive steps to save themselves from getting the virus.
Although the development of a vaccine is necessary following the preventive measures also help to control the new coronavirus cases, to some extent. A new study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine which reported a three-step guide to slow down the spread of coronavirus until a vaccine is not developed.

These three steps are as follows.
- Handwashing
- Social distancing
- Mask wearing
The researchers concluded that despite having a vaccine if people play a responsible role and start following these three essential steps, the new cases can be reduced significantly. These measures affect the transmission rate and reduce it, which means fewer people will be exposed to the virus.
The study also predicted that at least 50% of the US population has to follow these preventive steps to make a huge change in this pandemic. If only a few people are following them and the rest chose to ignore, it may not be of any help.
These measures don’t have to be certified or imposed by the state or federal level. Even personal care and self-practices will help too.
The research team presented a computational model of coronavirus cases in the UK based on official information. It was used to predict the effects of three-step preventive measures by the public.
The self-imposed prevention measures should be adopted quickly, the researchers emphasized while the officially imposed bans could improve the infectious spread even better.
The self-induced measures include simple things such as hand hygiene, social distancing, avoiding touching surfaces in public, and using a face mask while meeting anyone or being in public.
The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds social distancing to be extremely helpful in preventing new coronavirus cases. The CDC also emphasizes frequent hand washing to keep them healthy and free from catching coronavirus.
Coronavirus is highly likely to spread through unwashed, dirty and contaminated hands, surfaces, and people. Those who are infected could leave viral droplets through their cough, sneeze, or simply blowing or wiping the nose and touching any person or surface with the same hand.

The respiratory droplets land on any nearest surface or a person which is why wearing a mask in public is made mandatory to avoid transmitting the virus. A previous study published in April reveals that the facemasks are one of the most effective non-pharma interventions that could slow down the pandemic.
US needs to learn some lessons from the countries that are able to control the coronavirus cases using self-practices, confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Within three days after WHO declared coronavirus a public health emergency, New Zealand formulated its control plan and issued prevention measures for the public. On the other side, the US is reporting the highest single-day cases yet the public is not ready to accept the recommendations to prevent new coronavirus cases. People are refusing to use facemasks, they are conducting protests and there is a huge number of population that believes coronavirus to be a hoax.
