Increase in Coronavirus Cases Leads Hospitals to Reach full Capacity

Coronavirus cases are climbing and they show no signs of stopping. Matters appear to grow worse now that a doctor from a special coronavirus unit in a Houston hospital has said they will reach maximum capacity within 14 days if the increase in coronavirus cases does not stop.

Dr. Joseph Varon who is the chief medical officer working at the United Memorial Medical Cente shares that he has seen more hospital admission of severely ill patients than he has in the last 10 weeks. Explaining how this is a cause for alarm he says there is a rise in the severe symptoms and the number of coronavirus patients admitted to the hospitals.

This is a reality for many hospitals in the country. The health crisis brought by the increase in cases is not only depleting health care resources but also the capacity of treatment.

Daily hospitalizations due to coronavirus show no signs in stopping. The director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that there are at least 12 states reporting an increase in daily hospital admissions.

This is a worrying trend because it can cause a series of problems for society at large. An unexpected increase in coronavirus cases can overfill hospitals. Doing so will mean that important resources such as beds, health care staff, and things like ventilators will run out.

Some of these hospitals are already experiencing this crisis and are starting to shift patients to other places for care. A report from Texas says doctors have to develop new waiting lists for the ICU beds, which is alarming as more and more patients require it.

Other doctors beginning to pick and choose patients based on severity as they are incapable of providing help to all those who need it.

In other states, health workers and doctors are reporting a worrying increase in younger patients. These patients are not only younger but are also sicker than those coming in the previous weeks. This trend is prompting doctors to plead people to remain at their houses and wear masks as they are the most efficient precautions against the disease.

This rise in infections comes right as states are all set to reopen and easing lockdowns. These states that were previously succeeding by keeping the virus at bay are now experiencing outbreaks again.

Dr. David De La Zerda is an ICU medical director and a pulmonologist who works at the Jackson Memorial Hospital (Miami). He says he sees people coming out to the beach daily avoiding social distancing precautions.

According to recent forecasts published by the CDC, Florida, as well as Texas might see 2000 new hospital cases daily just by mid of the July. For Arizona as well as California, the new forecasts tell that there are 1500 new cases daily in the following two weeks.

Sylvester Turner, mayor of a big county in Texas, confirms that about two hospitals have almost reached full capacity. This further confirms the perils brought by the rise in cases of this novel virus.

Turner says the threat of coronavirus is much bigger than any other thing. He adds that there is the transmission of this lethal virus is dangerously uncontrolled between our friends, families, and communities. He emphasizes the need to decline the spread of coronavirus and makes sure that the hospitals do not take a hit as a result.

A lot of Houston hospitals are still almost over capacity limits, among them is also the United Memorial Medical Center. The hospital is currently tipping with 80% capacity.

The influx of patients suffering from COVID-19 is straining the capacities of hospitals in several states. This is a cause for concern as some people continue to avoid wearing masks and take part in social activities.

As the world continues to experience an increase in coronavirus cases, Health officials worldwide advise people to continue taking precautions. Wearing masks and social distancing are affective measures against coronavirus and therefore diligent observance of these measures will not only relieve the burden on hospitals but also end risks of transmission.
