For the First Time in History, US Records 29% Decline in Cancer Incidence (1991-2017)

Cancer is not just one disease but a group of diseases involving the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer is one of the major causes of death in the US by a disease. Only in 2019, there were 1.8 million cases of cancer diagnosis, among which 268,600 were women diagnosed with breast cancer. Lung cancer and bronchus cancer were second highly prevailing cancers in the USA, reported as 228,150 cases.

This new study estimates a 29 % decline in the cancer death rate is seen in the US from 1991 to 2017. During this span, 2.9 million lives are saved from cancer. It has reported a record decline of 2.2 % in lung cancer in the US.

The medical director of the cancer center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School defines the importance of public health campaigns. These campaigns have a key role in declining the cancer death rate.

The most common reason for lung cancer is smoking. In the past years, the US people had taken some preventions strictly and reduced the use of smoking. As tobacco is a high-risk factor for most cancers and in the case of lung cancer the only greatest cause is smoking.

The introduction of new drugs is hope for untreatable cancer patients. As immunotherapy can increase the immune system power to kill all the cancer cells. But still, millions of new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in the US and it is a leading cause of cancer death.

The screening programs and the earlier therapeutic successes are also beneficial for prostate, colorectal, and breast cancer. Because more decline is seen in these cancer death rates. Every year death rates of women are found more due to lung cancer as compared to lung cancer.

The researchers found that the drugs introduced against cancers can kill the cancer cells or can slow the growth of these cells. Immunotherapy is the best way to treat melanoma. And a pronounced decrease in cancer death rates for melanoma is observed for 8 years. Pembrolizumab is an immunotherapeutic drug that is highly effective against cancer.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are a specific class of drugs and have the ability to change the course of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) on which it depends. These inhibitors convert this highly fatal disease to a less fatal disease with which the patients can live a normal life span.

This is FDA-approved and can be used for the treatment of lymphoma and some types of leukemia.

These remarkable advances for the detection, treatment, and prevention of cancer are a great hope to explore more advanced ways to protect people against all types of cancer. Cancer is the number one cause of more deaths in the US. And the researchers are hopeful to make more progress with all types of cancer to stamp out cancer from the whole world.
